Happy April!!

The warmer days are coming and we are ready for you! Our Easter items are out and on display. Our Life is good collection has expanded- the Spring and Summer colors and products are so cool this year. Stop by and get your favorites before you head to the beach.

I wanted to let you in on one of my new ventures. As many of you already know, we have a Facebook page for The Miller House, but now I have started an Interior Design group. The complete title is Interior Design Tips & Techniques with Brenda Miller. If you have an questions on design, feel free to post a question. I will be answering questions and giving information on how to make your home lively, lovely and comfortable.

I will share some of my favorite projects and hope to see many of your before and afters too! I look forward to this fun Facebook adventure!

Decorating Class Update

I just wanted to give an update- the next class march 24th is full. However, there are still a few openings left for the May 5th class. You will need to call or email to reserve your space.

This Spring has been very busy. We just had our Spring Open House last weekend with an outstanding turnout! Thanks to everyone that came out to see us. We are getting ready for a jewlery show March 31 st- just in time for Apple Blossom. I've found some unique pink and green pieces as well as pearls for the "Pumps & Pearls"event Be the first to get the look for The Bloom!

I'm going to need to focus some time here real soon on getting my gardens ready for the season. A wonderful friend is thinning out her gardens and giving me some wonderful plants! I'm so excited to create some new gardens and spaces. I'm going to spend alot of time replacing boxwoods- I lost 17 of them alst year. It was such a harsh winter.

Spring Design, Decorating & Technique Workshops

My classes are begining to fill up quickly. Our first of 2011 is being held this Thursday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. There are only 4 spaces left. We will be making Journals to house all your decorating tips and notes,

Other offerings are as follows:

March 24th- Staging & Arranging (Guest speaker Realtor Tammy Rogers)

May 1st- Fresh Ideas/Fresh Looks

June 16th- Parties & Napkin Folding

There is a fee of $10 per person.
All workshops/classes are held at The Miller House.

Proportion

What is proportion as it relates to design? I think of proportion as the most concrete and tangible element of design.

Choosing furniture of the proper size and proportion in relationship to the size of the room make a small room feel more expansive, or bring a grand space down to a more inviting, human scale. Hanging window treatments close to the crown molding can make the windows seem taller and using valanced can help camouflage windows of different sizes.

One rule of thumb regarding proportion is that it is generally better to err on the side of bigness. It is a common mistake to choose dinky pieces of furniture out of fear of making too strong a statement or to make a room appear larger. While you don't want a room crammed with oversize furniture, emphasizing selected elements-a generous chandelier, a huge armiore on a long wall or a long sofa. Several large scale accessories can achieve the same goal. You will have a greater impact, and can make even a small room feel grander!

Finding the Magic of the Season

Holiday magic: it is what we all hope for at this time of the year-special moments of joy that bind our families together. More often, we create our own through the way we celebrate and the traditions we keep. Decorating the tree and trimming our homes set a beautiful holiday scene and then add the food and music to lift our spirits. But in the end, it is the time we spend together that lets the magic happen. I am looking forward to my first Christmas with grandbaby, Jaxon!!

My goodness, the weather is suggesting the holidays are soon to be here. We want to thank all of our customers for helping us have another successful season. We are still open everyday until Christmas eve.

I am working on the events and sales for 2011. Can you believe that? I have had many of you asking about the decorating classes for next year. Yes, there will be classes next year and with a variety of great topics!

I am looking forward to my first Christmas with grandbaby, Jaxon. Just the other night he accidentally put a hole in one of his presents. Once he saw the colors, he knew it must be a toy and the paper kept tearing! Well ... I quickly flipped it over and he went
on his way. Love the short attention span of little ones.

"Life is Good" at The Miller House

I am so sorry I ave not posted anything before now! I have been so busy doing Interior Design jobs, teaching Decorating classes, and getting the store ready for Fall. I am also busy taking care of my wonderful grand baby, Jaxon. He is with us during the week so his mommy and daddy can work.

We are excited to offer Life is Good products to you!! We received our first shipment last week and more to arrive in a week! We have all the new Fall and Winter shirts, mugs, and more. If you don't see something you like, we can order for you- just for you as long as the item is in stock.

"Tabletops" Workshop August 12th

Oh my gosh, eight years since The Miller House was created! Time sure does fly. It has been a great journey and looking forward to many more years in business. We are so fortunate to sell great quality furniture and have such great customers that come to us.

This weekend is the last weekend to take advantage of the celebration. The biggest sale yet with 18% off any piece of furniture if you pay with a cash or check. Yes, that does include the upholstery and anything ordered. If you don't need any furniture, everything in the store is on sale including our famous dips.

I would like to mention that I have added another Tabletops workshop for those interested. It will be held August 12th from 6:3-7:30 pm at the store. Space is limited so please call to reserve. There is a $10.00 fee. Come join the fun and learn how to put together a great table for your next party or gathering.

Hot Week

Well, this week was hot and long! It felt like summer for sure!!

It have Kevin and I a chance to re-organize the warehouse to prepare for a big load of new furniture arriving this coming weekend. We will be opening at noon on Saturday and closed Friday to pick up the pieces. Many of you know that we like to inspect our own pieces and save on shipping so we can pass the savings on to you! The new beds are really nice and unique and built by Amish builders. They have more of a transitional look rather than traditional.

We have a new coffee table and end stands due from Amish builders in Ohio that should be arriving any day. It was a little too far for us to travel to pick up.

You will have to stop by and see our new furniture, including accessories. We have some great new lamps that I think would fit in any home.

Please remember we are closed the week of the 4th of July!

Visiting Ohio

I am so excited to be spending a few days with my friends Kelly and Jiniffer. We went to high school together and remain such great friends. Tomorrow we will be shopping and making a stop at the Workshops of David Smith. I am so excited. No matter what we do, it is just wonderful to create new memories. We are looking forward to many more visits in the future!

A Busy Week

We hope everyone had a great Apple Blossom! This year, we were closed on Saturday and went out of town. Oh my gosh!! We had to go to PA to pick furniture and it started out terrible. We drove 6 miles in an hour on I81 because of an accident. Once we were moving again, we made it in good time. Jaxon, our grandbaby, went along for the ride. We ended up coming home early- good thing- one day later, Jaxon was coughing and had watery eyes. We took him to the doctor and he had an ear infection. Now with medicine, he is back to his old self- smiling and giggling. He goes home to his mommy and daddy tonight.

While we were gone my great girlfriends Amy and Mandy watched our store. I asked them to re-decorate a bit and they did a fantastic job!

We have left our jewelry out for any last minute Mother's Day gifts that you may need. We will be open Mother's Day Sunday from 12-5. If you haven't been here in a while, you might be pleasantly surprised at all the new accessories that we have in the store. Many have said we could be the "Pottery Barn" of Winchester. I have to say, our furniture will never be like them- ours is Made in the USA, not imported!!!

I am looking forward to the end of the month because I am traveling to Ohio to hook up with an old girlfriend from high school. I will be going with another friend from high school that lives here. We are so excited!

A Wonderful Ride

For those of you that don't know me well, I have to tell you that I have wanted a horse for as long as I can remember! My parents saved a note I had written when I was 8 to the tooth fairy. Rather than leave me money, I asked for a horse to be left tied to the back porch, which is now the "red room" of the store.

Well, last September, my wish came true. I was given a rescue horse that is named Colonel. He is a chestnut quarter horse that is just a lovable and gentle boy. He is 6 years old and is still a bit green. He has had some riding hours, but not many.

I took him to the ring last night and he did a wonderful job. I am so proud of him. I am taking him to a clinic in May with a professional horse trainer from Wyoming. I am very excited to see what he can do and learn. Keep in mind that I am learning too! Thanks to my neighbor who not only keeps him, she also is training the both of us!

A Dinner with a friend

I had such a great time last night with my friend, Loretta. I was finally able to get together with her for dinner. We met through my Interior Design business. I helped her with window treatments and furniture/accessory purchases. It has been so rewarding seeing her house transform from a house to a home.

As I worked on her home, the friendship just blossomed. I/We feel like we have known each other for years. Her wonderful personality and kind spirit makes you want to hang with her!

A couple weeks ago, I helped her with her daughter's birthday party. There were more adults than kids! I took over my popcorn popper and everyone just loved the popcorn. Next thing I know, we have two of them. During the party (after I left) it somehow got a split in the glass. Thoughtful Loretta felt so bad that she ordered us a new one! The other one still works fine! See what I mean about kind spirit?

So, now with two of them, we are bringing one to The Miller House to serve popcorn to customers during the Fall months. Don't be surprised to smell popcorn rather than our wonderful smells of sachets and diffusers.

A Wonderful Week

Good afternoon! I must tell you about the wonderful day I had yesterday with my dad. We both had the day off to travel to Lexington, Virginia to hear Pat Parelli, a well-known horseman. What an inspirational day! I cannot wait to start working with my horse, Colonel, once the wind slows down and the rain stops falling. Many thanks to my husband, Kevin and my friend, Mandy, for watching my store while I was gone.

I just got in more wreaths, but they are going fast! I also got in a great shipment of pillows that will brighten any room. They are not only beautiful but soft.

Our next Jewelry Show is quickly approaching- Mark your calendars for April 15th from 6-8 pm. Get the lastest designer look for great prices and the refreshments aren't so bad either!

Buck's County Furniture...

Well, its been a busy day considering the rain! Thanks to all who came out for Spring Open House! We have one more day, so don't worry- we are open 12-5 tomorrow. Then we are off for two days!!!

On Wednesday, we will have some of our Buck's County Furniture on the floor. We are now the Winchester area dealer. It's all Made in the USA.

We will leave tommorrow for PA to pick up more fabulous furniture along with the Buck's County. We just love our Amish builders! Don't forget, we can customize so many items thanks to my builders!!! They are amazing.

A Little Bit of Personal and Professional

Although the weather is rainy and damp, my store is warm and inviting...I have the store all decorated for Spring. There are some great wreaths, garlands, and cloches this year. What is a cloche you ask?- the proper name for a bell jar. They are not just for the garden, they make great display pieces too. You'll have to come and see them. I bought both glass and terra cotta ones this year. Hurry, they are going fast!

I am really excited about all the gift ideas for you! I have great looking change purses, mirror compacts and the flower vases with a cast iron top. Seriously, you've got to stop by!!!

I almost forgot to tell you about the new scents in sachets and soaps! Our garden breeze sachet has flown out the door and our lime zest soap is incredible.

Oh, if you didn't know- I have a new grandbaby- but I am referred to as Grammy. His name is Jaxon Tyler and he is two months old. He visits us alot!
